This may seem counter-intuitive but if, like me, you hold to the value of mindfulness and being present in the moment then it will come as no surprise that not avoiding unpleasant emotions and allowing oneself to be open to them can be beneficial in the long run, given the right attitude.
It would seem that the key to overall happiness is the balancing of the good and the bad, too much of a good thing (or the attempt thereof) being by definition not good at all. Life is full of paradoxes, the ignorance or denial of which seems to be the root of a great deal of dis-ease.
